Secondary English Language Arts ESL and Social Studies Teacher for 2022-23

French Ministry of Education, Alberta Education and CAIS accredited French bilingual school, about 450 students total, is seeking a full-time English Language Art and Social Studies beginning in February 2023.

Founded in 1966, Lycée international de Calgary is a non-denominational independent French international school providing a challenging and stimulating bilingual education within a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment. We are Calgary’s premier French School, the only pre-K to Grade 12 school in Western Canada both accredited by the French Ministry of Education and Alberta Education. As a member of the AEFE, we are part of a network of over 500 schools in 140 countries.

Reporting to the Director of English Program, the ELA and SS Teacher is responsible for teaching, preparing and delivering subject matter to Lycée international de Calgary students via deliberate and engaging pedagogy. Teachers will liaise with other teachers, coordinators and administration as necessary so as to deliver the program in a manner that appropriately supports, nurtures and challenges each student to reach his/her fullest academic, intellectual, social, emotional and physical potential. Teachers conduct the student’s program in a manner that is in keeping with both Lycée international de Calgary’s mission, policies and procedures, along with the highest standards of professional competence and ethics. Teachers have a critical role in executing the vision, mission, and philosophy of Lycée international de Calgary.

The ELA and SS Teacher duties include but are not limited to:

  • Plan and discuss educational programs with administrators
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials
  • Teach to students in accordance with Alberta Education standards
  • Teach to students in accordance with The Ministry of French Education standards
  • Individualize instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
  • Provide required instructional accommodations to address various student learning styles
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behaviours needed to achieve a highly functional learning environment in the classrooms
  • Maintain student discipline by establishing and communicating positive, appropriate expectations/rules/procedures with students and enforcing them with consistency, fairness and firmness
  • Cooperate with the administration when support for discipline is necessary
  • Evaluate students on an ongoing basis
  • Administer standardized Alberta Education testing and Ministry of France testing
  • Take a leadership role in developing the curriculum and promoting it in school and throughout the community
  • Select and requisition books and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records
  • Supervise students out of the classroom as required
  • Serve on the curriculum and standards committee
  • Attend faculty, instructional leaders and school meetings
  • Attend and participate in provincial and national associations and conferences
  • Present professional development for teachers and staff
  • Engage in healthy and meaningful collaboration with teachers and staff
  • Model citizenship through positive and respectful interactions with students and all community members
  • Provide families with the information necessary to support their student and the program, including but not limited to homework assignments and upcoming class events
  • Enhance good relationships between the school and families by fostering a respectful, cordial, and professional relationship with parents, guardians, and other family members
  • Engage in the events of the community
  • Lead an extracurricular activity as required (Chess club for example)
  • Act as a homeroom teacher upon request

The ELA and SS Teacher is evaluated on an ongoing basis by the Director of English Program and follows a self-directed program of professional development, which is created in consultation with the Vice Principal, Director of English Program and/or Head of School.

Required skills:

  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Strong knowledge of child development, second language, and content acquisition, and best practices in teaching and assessment
  • Demonstrated teaching skills and mastery of the subject(s) taught
  • Bachelor of Education
  • Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate (or eligible for an Interim Teaching Certificate)
  • Solid understanding and appreciation of the philosophy and unique goals of Lycée international de Calgary
  • Ability to speak French an asset
  • A passion for children, including an understanding of and respect for students’ individual learning styles

Term:

  • Until June 29, 2023.

Start date:

  • Februrary 2023.

Salary:

  • Competitive, commensurate with experience between $55,300 and $89,000

Substitute Secondary Teacher / Grade 6 to 12

Reporting to the Head of School, the Secondary Teacher is responsible for teaching, preparing and delivering subject matter to students at the Lycée. The Secondary Teacher will liaise with secondary teachers, coordinators and administration as necessary. Teachers have a critical role in executing the mission, vision and philosophies of Lycée international de Calgary.

The duties of the Secondary teacher include but are not limited to:

• Plan and discuss educational program with administrators;
• Teach to students in accordance with Alberta Education standards;
• Teach to students in accordance with The Minister of French Education standards;
• Develop lesson plans and instructional materials;
• Individualize instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student;
• Establish and maintain standards of student behaviours needed to achieve a functional learning environment in the classrooms;
• Evaluate students on an ongoing basis;
• Take a leadership role in promoting the curriculum in school and throughout the community;
• Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records;

• Participate in onsite or offsite French lessons as required and requested;
• Lead an extracurricular activity as required (chess club for example).

Required skills:

• Strong classroom management skills;
• Solid understanding and appreciation of the philosophy and unique goals of Lycée international de Calgary;
• Fluent in French and/or English.

Other requirements:

• Up-to-date First Aid & CPR certificates;
• Up-to-date police Check with Vulnerable Sector Search;
