Math Week 2025: Mathematics Beyond the Classroom!

From March 10 to 19, 2025, Math Week returned to Lycée international de Calgary with a brand-new edition, encouraging students, teachers, and families to step outside their comfort zones and discover mathematics beyond the classroom!

Mathematics: A Living and Ever-Present Discipline

By the initiative of the French Ministry of National Education and its online platform Eduscol, every spring lycées around the world celebrate this special week aimed at reconciling all students with mathematics by highlighting its central role in daily life and its importance in shaping the citizens of tomorrow. Numbers, shapes, measurements, digital sciences—mathematics is everywhere and helps us better understand the world around us.Math is not limited to classrooms; it can be found in art, music, economics, nature, and even cooking! This is why the 2025 edition, “Math Beyond the Classroom” (Maths hors les murs in French) , encouraged exploring the subject outside the traditional school setting.

An Exciting Program for a Different Approach to Learning

Lycée Calgary offered fun and interactive activities to spark curiosity and encourage teamwork among students:
Daily Math Puzzle – A new challenge was proposed every day to develop logic and reasoning skills.
Number Race – A fast-paced mental math challenge.
Kangaroo Contest – A quiz-based competition to test mathematical knowledge.
Interdisciplinary Projects – Combining multiple subjects to showcase the many aspects of mathematics.
Cross-Level Activities – Brought together students of different ages to learn collaboratively.

One of the highlights of the week was Friday, March 14 (aka 3.14) , as Lycée Calgary celebrated the famous Pi Day. This special day dedicated to the number π featured a pie-baking contest, honoring this iconic mathematical constant. A perfect blend of creativity, fun, and science!

Mathematics: A Source of Joy and Creativity

Far from being a rigid or intimidating subject, mathematics can also evoke aesthetic emotions. Behind a beautifully structured equation or a well-reasoned proof lies a kind of elegance that can also be seen in architecture, nature, and visual arts. This week seeked to awaken this appreciation and to show that mathematics is not just for an elite—it is for everyone!

By rethinking learning spaces and integrating mathematics into real-life situations, Math Week 2025 aimed to help Lycée Calgary students (re)discover the joy of working with numbers, solving problems, and creating together. It was an invitation to see math differently—beyond the classroom, but always at the heart of their daily lives.

🔢📐📊 Let the math adventure begin!
