Junior High: Where Global Ambition Meets Academic and Bilingual Excellence

Welcome to collège, which is French for junior high and spans from grades six to nine. It is a transformative period where students transition from foundational learning to a rigorous, specialized secondary education. At Lycée international de Calgary, we cultivate “glocal” citizens—students who are deeply connected to their local community while possessing the skills and knowledge to thrive on the world stage.

Students who thrive here

Is your child a  curious learner ready for an academic challenge? Our junior high students are driven by a desire to excel in a bilingual environment. While we do not require French to be spoken at home, our ideal candidate demonstrates a strong command of the language and a passion for mastering additional ones.

The “Best of Both Worlds” Curriculum

We offer a dual-curriculum experience that has no equivalent in Alberta. By blending the high standards of the French Ministry of Education with the Alberta Education context, our students receive a well-rounded education across all disciplines:

  • Sciences & Technology: Students engage with chemistry, physics, and biology starting in junior high, with technology introduced as a specialized subject.
  • Humanities & Arts: We develop critical thinkers through civics, philosophy, visual arts, and social studies.
  • Trilingual Ambition: Every student begins learning Spanish as a third language in Grade 6, continuing through Grade 12.
  • Physical Education: Our program promotes active living through diverse offerings, including a dedicated climbing wall and a growing athletics program with teams competing across Calgary, and internationally through the AEFE.

A Gateway to the World

As a proud member of the AEFE network,  a prestigious global community of over 600 schools in 140 countries who are certified to teach the curriculum from France, we offer unparalleled opportunities:

  • The Diplôme National du Brevet (DNB): In Grade 9, our students sit for the Brevet, a rigorous national examination from France that marks the successful completion of junior high. This prestigious certification validates their academic progress and bilingual proficiency, serving as a significant milestone that prepares them for the high expectations of the French Baccalauréat and beyond.
  • Overnight Trips: Building on the independence sparked by trips starting in Grade 3, our middle schoolers take on increasingly ambitious travel, including the legislature in Edmonton, a university research station in Kananaskis and a hallmark experience in grade 8 or 9 with a trip to France.
  • Global Exchanges: In Grade 10, students can participate in 4–6 week international exchanges through the AEFE network.

Future-Focused: The French Baccalauréat Advantage

Our junior high program is the first step toward the French Baccalauréat, a globally recognized credential. Graduates of our school stand out in university admissions and are often eligible for advanced university credits.

Our IMPACT Values

Everything we do is guided by our core values: Inquiry, Multiculturalism, Perseverance, Authenticity, Community, and Transformation. We provide specialized, individual attention to ensure every student is a future-ready global citizen.
