Junior High (Gr 6-9)

In the French system, junior high is known as collège. This critical stage, spanning grades 6 to 9 (or Sixième to Troisième), is where we expand on elementary foundations, focusing on abstract concepts, rigorous analysis, and cross-disciplinary learning. Students in collège develop more autonomy moving class to class and are taught by specialized teachers certified in France and possessing a masters degree in their subject matter.

Expanding Horizons and Deepening Skills

Students transition into a more specialized, subject-based structure that is designed to strengthen critical intellectual skills. Key characteristics of this stage include:

Abstract Concepts

The curriculum introduces complex ideas across all disciplines, requiring students to move beyond rote memorization and apply knowledge to new scenarios.

Skill Development

Throughout collège, students consistently strengthen their analytical, communication, and organizational skills, preparing them for the academic demands of High School.

Spanish instruction

Starting in grade 6, students learn Spanish at the school and will continue to do so until grade 12 and graduate trilingual from the school.

Extracurricular activities

Students gain access to a range of extracurricular activities, including clubs that allow them to develop and strengthen their skills and interest in sports, arts and sciences.

PhysEd

Physical education is mandatory until grade 12 and students can also choose to participate in sports teams who compete in the Calgary Independent School Athletics Association.

Field trips

Students enjoy annual overnight trips: Grade 6 visits Edmonton, Grade 7 heads to Kananaskis, and Grades 8 and 9 travel to France.

Le Diplôme National du Brevet (DNB)

The Junior High stage ends with the Diplôme National du Brevet (DNB) examination at the end of the Troisième year (Grade 9 in addition to the Alberta Provincial Achievement Tests.) The DNB is a national benchmark that certifies the student’s mastery of core knowledge and skills acquired throughout collège. It serves as the first official, nationally recognized diploma in their French academic journey. Successfully completing the DNB ensures students are ready to advance to the final stage of secondary education and begin preparing for the French Baccalauréat.
